Meowtasia Grooming Policies
Clear, gentle guidelines to keep every appointment safe, calm, and predictable.
Our policies are here to help create a safe, calm, and predictable grooming experience for every cat we care for. These guidelines ensure we can work gently, professionally, and respectfully while keeping your cat’s wellbeing at the heart of every appointment.
Grooming
Preferences
Every cat is unique, and so are their grooming needs. If you have specific preferences such as haircut style, coat length, or special instructions for sensitive areas. Please share them with us before the appointment begins. Clear communication helps us create the look you want while keeping your cat comfortable.
While we always do our best to follow your requested style, your cat’s safety, comfort, and coat condition will always come first. Sometimes adjustments are necessary if a preferred style isn’t safe or achievable for your cat’s coat, temperament, or overall wellbeing. In these cases, the groomer will use their professional judgment to choose the safest and most humane option.
Our goal is to give your cat a beautiful, healthy groom while ensuring they feel secure and cared for throughout the process.
House-Call
Grooming
Meowtasia Feline Grooming provides a calm, cat‑focused grooming experience right in the comfort of your home. To help the appointment run smoothly, we ask that you provide access to your bathroom or an equivalent grooming‑appropriate space. This area should be clean, safe, and free of clutter or obstacles before the groomer arrives.
Bathrooms are ideal because they offer:
-
A quiet, contained environment
-
Easy cleanup
-
Fewer hiding spots
-
A familiar space for your cat
During the appointment, the groomer will work gently and efficiently, and once the session is complete, the grooming area will be fully cleaned and disinfected, including removal of hair and any grooming debris.
Our goal is to create a stress‑free, seamless grooming experience for both you and your cat right at home.
Pre-Exisiting
Heath Conditions
Your cat’s safety and wellbeing are always our top priority. To ensure we can provide the safest grooming experience possible, we ask that you let us know about any pre‑existing medical conditions your cat may have such as allergies, heart or respiratory concerns, mobility issues, or skin sensitivities.
Sharing this information helps us tailor the grooming process to your cat’s needs and avoid anything that could cause discomfort or stress. If important health details are not disclosed, it may increase the risk of complications during grooming.
We’re here to support your cat’s comfort every step of the way, and open communication helps us provide the gentle, attentive care they deserve.
Matting, Tangling, & Excess Undercoat
Some cats naturally develop areas of matting, tangling, or heavy undercoat buildup—especially long‑haired breeds, seniors, overweight cats, or those who struggle with regular grooming. When this happens, extra care and time are needed to safely restore the coat.
Removing mats and tangles is a delicate process. Depending on the severity, it may require careful brushing, specialized tools, or in some cases, shaving the affected areas to prevent pain or skin injury. While every effort is made to keep your cat comfortable, mat removal can occasionally reveal hidden irritation or cause minor redness simply because the skin has been under stress.
Dematting fees apply for mild to severe matting to reflect the additional time, skill, and gentle handling required. If your cat’s coat is fully pelted (tight, solid sheets of matting close to the skin), a Royal Renewal fee will be charged. This covers the extended time, behaviour management, and slow, safe removal techniques needed to free the coat without causing unnecessary stress.
Severe Matting & Pelting
Severe matting and pelting are serious coat conditions that can cause significant discomfort and health risks for your cat. When mats are left for too long, they can become extremely tight against the skin, restricting movement, trapping moisture, and pulling on delicate areas of the body.
During removal, even with the gentlest and most skilled handling, the following may occur:
-
Major redness, irritation, or bruising where mats were tightly attached
-
Revealed wounds or sores that were hidden beneath the mats
-
Minor skin tears, especially in senior cats or those with fragile skin
-
Increased sensitivity due to restored blood flow after mats are removed
These effects are a direct result of the condition of the coat and skin, not the grooming process. The groomer’s role is to safely remove the mats using humane techniques, but the risks associated with severe matting are unavoidable once the coat has reached this state.
It is the owner’s responsibility to keep their cat on a regular grooming schedule to prevent matting and pelting from developing. Routine care ensures your cat stays comfortable, healthy, and safe during grooming.
Our priority is always your cat’s well being. When severe matting is present, we will choose the safest, least stressful option, even if that means shaving the coat short to relieve discomfort and prevent further harm.
Senior Cat Policy
Senior cats hold a very special place in our hearts. As cats age, they often develop fragile skin, dull or thinning coats, reduced mobility, and underlying or pre‑existing health conditions. These factors make them high‑risk grooming clients, and extra care is always required.
When a senior cat is matted, the risks increase significantly. Tight mats can pull on delicate skin, restrict movement, and hide irritation or wounds. During removal, even with the gentlest handling, there is a higher chance of injury, skin tears, or severe stress. In rare but possible cases, the stress of grooming can contribute to a senior cat passing away, especially if underlying health issues are present.
To protect their wellbeing, we:
-
keep sessions as low‑stress as possible
-
provide frequent breaks
-
monitor closely for signs of fatigue or distress
-
stop the appointment immediately if the cat shows high stress
-
may recommend splitting the groom into multiple shorter session
Our priority is always the safety and comfort of your senior cat. Many older cats come to us for their first-ever groom due to coat changes, mobility issues, or health conditions, and we approach every senior with patience, gentleness, and respect.
In the heartbreaking event that a senior cat passes away during grooming, please know the groomer will be just as devastated. We love and care for every cat we work with, and such an outcome is never the groomer’s fault. Age, health, and coat condition all play significant roles in a senior cat’s grooming tolerance.
Anxious, Aggressive, or Nervous Felines
Every cat handles grooming differently. Some may feel unsure, overwhelmed, or defensive especially if they’re new to professional grooming or have had stressful experiences in the past. Our priority is always to keep your cat safe, calm, and comfortable.
If your cat becomes highly anxious, nervous, or reactive, the groomer may recommend splitting the grooming process into two shorter appointments. This approach helps reduce stress and allows your cat to build trust at a pace that feels safe for them.
In these situations, a one‑time PurrCare handling fee may be applied to reflect the additional time, patience, and specialized handling required. You’ll be billed 50% of the grooming fee at the first appointment, with the remaining balance due at the second session once the groom is completed.
Medication or Sedation
Some cats feel extremely anxious or overwhelmed during grooming, and in certain cases, medication prescribed by a veterinarian can help create a safer, calmer experience. While not all cats need sedation, some do benefit from medication that helps reduce fear, stress, or reactive behaviour.
If your cat requires medication or sedation to be groomed safely, it is the owner’s responsibility to administer the prescribed dose before the appointment, following your veterinarian’s guidance. This ensures your cat is calm enough for a gentle, low‑stress grooming session.
If medication is recommended and not given, or if the groomer arrives and the client was unaware of the need for medication, the appointment will be immediately cancelled and rescheduled once the appropriate medication has been obtained. This protects your cat’s wellbeing and ensures grooming can be done safely and humanely.
Our goal is always to support your cat’s comfort, reduce stress, and provide the safest grooming experience possible especially for cats who need a little extra help to feel secure.
Safe Hand‑Off Carrier Policy
Some cats feel nervous, hide, or become difficult to safely pick up when a new person arrives. To keep your cat calm and to ensure a smooth start to the appointment, any cat who is anxious, fearful, combative, or prone to hiding must be ready in a secure carrier when the groomer arrives.
Having your cat contained allows for a safe, gentle hand‑off and helps keep the grooming schedule running on time. If a cat cannot be safely retrieved or handed over, the appointment may need to be cancelled to avoid delays for other clients. In these cases, a cancellation fee may apply.
Our goal is always to make grooming as stress‑free as possible for both your cat and the groomer.
Flea-Free Policy
To protect every cat we serve and to keep our mobile grooming environment clean and safe we require all cats to be free from fleas and other parasites at the time of their appointment. Because grooming is performed inside your home and with equipment that travels from client to client, parasites can easily spread through tools, clothing, and soft surfaces if not addressed immediately.
If fleas or other parasites are discovered during the appointment, grooming must be stopped right away to prevent contamination. When this happens, we are required to cancel the remainder of our day to fully disinfect equipment, sanitize all tools, and ensure no parasites are carried into another client’s home. This results in multiple lost appointments, which can be devastating for a small business.
A $200 fumigation, sanitation, and loss‑of‑day fee will be applied. This fee helps cover:
-
the groomer’s time to thoroughly disinfect and treat all equipment
-
the cost of fumigation supplies
-
the loss of income from clients who must be rescheduled
We strongly recommend keeping your cat on a regular flea prevention routine to ensure their comfort and to maintain a safe, hygienic grooming environment for all our feline clients.
Service Area Policy
Meowtasia Feline Grooming is based in Truro, Nova Scotia, and proudly serves Colchester County, Pictou County, and East Hants with in‑home mobile grooming.
Your grooming service includes up to 30 minutes of travel from Truro at no additional cost. For homes located beyond this radius, a small travel fee may be added to help cover extra distance, time, and accessibility. This fee is separate from grooming services and can be provided at booking or anytime upon request.
We aim to keep travel fees fair, transparent, and tailored to each client’s location while ensuring your cat receives calm, professional care right at home.
Purrluxe Travel Fee Policy
For families living outside our regular service area, Meowtasia offers Purrluxe Travel a long‑distance grooming option designed to bring feline‑exclusive care to communities farther away.
Purrluxe Travel fees help cover the additional round‑trip travel time, fuel, loss of local appointment availability, and normal vehicle wear and tear. These fees are based on distance traveled and total grooming time.
If you have multiple cats, the Purrluxe Travel fee is charged once per household, and each additional cat is simply billed at their standard grooming rate.
Purrluxe Travel allows us to reach more cats safely and sustainably while maintaining the high standard of care Meowtasia is known for.
Preventable Illnesses
While Meowtasia Feline Grooming does not require vaccinations, we do ask that all cats be in good overall health at the time of their appointment. To the best of your knowledge, your cat should not be carrying any communicable or preventable illnesses, nor should they have recently been exposed to other sick animals.
This helps protect not only your cat, but also the many other feline families we serve throughout the week. Because grooming takes place inside your home and our equipment travels from client to client, undisclosed illness can increase health risks for others.
If your cat is showing signs of illness such as lethargy, coughing, sneezing, discharge, vomiting, diarrhea, or unusual behaviour, please let us know so we can reschedule. Open communication ensures a safe, healthy grooming environment for every cat in our care.
Do Not Disturb Policy
To keep your cat safe and relaxed during grooming, we ask that you avoid entering the grooming area or interacting with your cat while the session is in progress. Even small distractions such as calling their name, talking to them, or stepping into the room can cause sudden movement, stress, or anxiety, which increases the risk of injury.
Cats often behave very differently when their owner is present. Staying out of the grooming space allows your groomer to work calmly, safely, and efficiently, and helps your cat stay focused and settled.
If the groomer needs your assistance at any point, you will be invited in. Otherwise, giving your cat space ensures the best and safest grooming experience possible.
Emergency Medical Care Authorization
Your cat’s safety is always our highest priority. In the rare event of a medical emergency during grooming, the groomer will take immediate steps to ensure your cat receives the care they need. If urgent veterinary attention is required, Meowtasia Feline Grooming is authorized to seek treatment on your behalf.
We will make every reasonable effort to contact you before any care is provided. However, if time is critical, your cat’s wellbeing will always come first.
This includes emergencies related to pre‑existing health conditions, such as:
-
heart conditions
-
breathing or respiratory issues
-
seizure disorders
-
or any other life‑threatening medical concern
If a serious medical event occurs, we reserve the right to immediately transport your cat to the nearest veterinary clinic to ensure they receive prompt, potentially life‑saving care. Any veterinary expenses that arise from emergency treatment will be the responsibility of the owner.
Our goal is to keep every grooming session safe, calm, and stress‑free but if an unexpected situation occurs, you can trust that your cat will be cared for with urgency, compassion, and professionalism.
Groomer's Right to Refuse Service
The safety and well-being of your cat and of our groomers always come first. For this reason, Meowtasia Feline Grooming reserves the right to refuse or discontinue services at any time, including during an active appointment.
Service may be declined or stopped under circumstances such as:
-
highly aggressive, reactive, or extremely stressed animals
-
health concerns that make grooming unsafe
-
incomplete, inaccurate, or undisclosed client information
-
violation of booking, payment, or safety policies
-
any situation in which the groomer feels uncomfortable or unsafe
-
aggression, hostility, or disrespect toward the groomer
We maintain a zero‑tolerance policy for aggression or disrespect toward staff. If at any point the groomer feels unsafe, threatened, or disrespected, they may leave or terminate the session immediately.
Our goal is always to provide a calm, safe, and positive grooming experience. Respecting boundaries and safety guidelines ensures the best possible outcome for both your cat and your groomer.
Cancellation Policy
We understand that life happens and plans can change. To keep our schedule running smoothly and to respect the time reserved for each cat, we require a minimum of 48 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule an appointment.
If less than 48 hours’ notice is provided unless due to an emergency a $50 cancellation fee will apply. This fee must be paid before any future appointments can be booked.
Because we serve a limited number of cats each day, last‑minute cancellations create gaps that are difficult to fill and directly impact our small business. Providing advance notice helps us offer timely appointments to all clients and ensures fairness for everyone.
Photography & Social Media
We love celebrating the beautiful cats we groom, and from time to time we may take photos or short video clips during the grooming session. These images may be used for social media, our website, or other promotional materials to showcase our work and help educate cat owners.
If you prefer that your cat not be photographed or shared, simply let us know before your appointment. We fully respect your privacy, and opting out will never affect the quality of care your cat receives.
Our goal is always to highlight the gentle, positive grooming experience we provide while honoring each client’s comfort level and preferences.
